We offer two types of numbered and lettered slate house signs; Hand cut lettering gives a 'v' cut inside the letters, whereas sand-blasted lettering gives a slightly more rounded 'u' shape inside the cut, although this difference is not really noticeable unless using very large lettering and numbers. Flourishes taken off letters normally only work well with hand-cut lettering.
The house names can also be enhanced with celtic designs and pictures of animals etc. Paint is often applied to the letters and can be off-white, grey or silver. The gold colouring seen in some of the examples on this page is gold leaf. The first set of examples below are all of hand cut lettering, this is the more expensive type due to the extra time taken in cutting the letters and numbers into the slate by hand. Click on the small pictures to view larger versions with descriptions of the lettering and design.
The second set of examples below are all of sand blasted lettering, this is a slightly less expensive style as sand-blasting the designs is quicker than cutting them by hand. Click on the small pictures to see larger versions with descriptions.
The prices of house signs depends on the number of letters, size of lettering and the type of finish (paint or gold leaf), as well as the type of cutting used. A typical sandblasted and painted house sign would probably cost around £70.00, whilst a typical handcut and painted house sign would probably be around £160.00-£200.00 The gold leaf is 23 and 2/3 carat English Gold Leaf and adds about 1/3 to the price of painted lettering. It is, however, extremely long lasting (up to 25 years in normal exposure!) and very beautiful when applied well. The paint will last about 12-15 years depending on the amount of exposure.
The designs shown are only a few of those we can do.- we havedone rhinos and mice, elves and elephants! Prices provided are only intended as a rough guide as each plate is priced individually.
